ABOUT THE GSM



  The Graduate School of Management (GSM) is a regional-based business school with an MBA program focusing on comprehensive knowledge of regional development to train business leaders, public professionals, and others to promote regional development. The Kagawa University GSM was founded in 2004 as a “Professional Graduate School”, a new form of graduate school established in the reformation of the Japanese university system, which aims at educating individuals with more practical capabilities suitable to meeting the demands of a rapidly changing and highly competitive society and economy. It is the first business school in the Chugoku/Shikoku region of Japan.   Many students from many types of organizations with various backgrounds in the private, public, and NPO sectors, and with backgrounds from different universities with various majors at the undergraduate level, study in the MBA program while working at companies and local governments. In consideration of these active adult graduate students, classes are often held on weekday evenings, Saturdays, and during summer vacations. The program features personalized small-group instruction; the GSM program is designed to combine the theoretical and practical realms in order to find clues to solve current issues in business and regional challenges. Interactive discussions using case materials in the classroom enable students to develop practical capabilities. The unique GSM curriculum provides students with not only the core courses in a standard business school such as management, marketing, and accounting, but also courses on public policy and regional science. The GSM faculty is composed of excellent research professors and experienced business professionals.  Activities of the GSM attempting to expand the relation between university and regional community include: 1) public symposium, 2) the inclusion in the GSM advisory board of regional leaders and experts in the private and public sectors, 3) off-campus workshops for students and professors, and 4) excursions and fieldwork experiences on up-to-date regional topics. Through the MBA program and networking in the GSM, students can obtain the fundamental capabilities and resources necessary to find their way in the complex economic landscape of the 21st century.

Practical Creative Work


Shinji HARA graduated in human geography from the University of Tokyo in 1990. After finishing doctor course of the University of Tokyo, he joined the faculty of Economics, Kagawa University in 1995. He was engaged in founding a new business school at Kagawa University in 2004, which uniquely put focus on MBA training for regional development. He became a professor at Graduate School of Management in 2011. He was appointed as the dean of the business school in 2015. His research topics include economic geography of industrial cluster, global project management, Hollywood movie industry and its global structural change, and creativity-based regional development. He carried out both quantitative and qualitative approach in his various researches. In 2014, he started a new course called “Creativity and Regional Development” aiming at training skills to develop a movie script with more regional elements as creative input and also to develop a business plan with collaboration of movie project and various local industry. The course is uniquely programed by hybrid of methods from both screenwriting in Hollywood and regional and organizational research including intensive fieldwork. He was a visiting scholar at UCLA between 1998 and 2000, and between 2011 and 2012 as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar.

Kazuhiko ITAYA received his MS in Coordinated Sciences in 1986 from the University of Tokyo. He received his PhD in Engineering in 2002, and also received his PhD in Arts and Sciences in the Department of General Systems Studies at the University of Tokyo in 2010. He joined the Toshiba Corporation in 1986 and had worked on the research and development and on related new business for more than 30 years. He was a visiting scholar at UCSB between 1993 and 1995. He was also appointed as the professor of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in 2013. He became a professor at Graduate School of Management in 2017. Dr. ITAYA, using qualitative methods, explains various creative activities of knowledge workers in the organization. He also proposes creativity-promoting management systems using social experimental methods. He has broad experience in business as well, as a researcher in technology at a technology-related company and as a business professional, aiming to take advantage of technology effectively in the service sectors. He believes that creativity of knowledge workers is strongly required in today’s various management organizations of companies and regional communities. He is and will be pursuing his research laying emphasis on mutual communication between university and companies / communities.

Prof. Dr. Kenichi Ohkita’s current research interest is in organizational competition, cooperation, and coopetition strategies, such as with complementary products in the Japanese video game market or with international brand licensing in the apparel market. He is also recently gaining interest in researching entrepreneurship and has written a book review for Asian Entrepreneurship. His former research interests are travel agency referral and seasonality in the tourism market, and pseudo-generics and the generic competition paradox in the prescription drug market.

Dr. Ohkita’s research has been published (chronologically) in Manegerial and Decision Economics, International Journal of Business Environment, International Journal of Business and Globalisation, Journal of the Japanese and International Economies, and World Review of Entrepreneurship, Management and Sustainable Development. He has a forthcoming chapter in Global Opportunities for Entrepreneurial Growth: Coopetition and Knowledge Dynamics within and across Firms. He is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business.

Dr. Ohkita gives advanced ‘Marketing Management’ and ‘Decision Making Analysis’ lectures using concrete cases built upon advanced lecture experience of ‘Marketing Strategy’ and ‘Strategic Management’ in Yamaguchi University Management of Technology graduate school lectures. He intends to show the essence of analysis techniques and theoretical frames, and to support creativity in a learning atmosphere.

Katsunori Sato is an associate professor at Graduate School of Management in Kagawa University..
He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Tohoku University in Japan and an MSc degree in Business and Commerce at Keio University, Japan.
His research focuses on the possibility of Social Business in developed countries.
He is particularly interested in regeneration of tsunami affected areas in Japan.
During his doctoral work he studied "Designing Community Development:
Neo-Contingency Approach to Community Building Organizations" in Japan. And he has volunteer experiences in several non-profit organisations.

My main research interests are in urban economics and new economic geography. In the last few years, I have conducted theoretical studies of functional specialization of cities.
The current research topics are (i) the optimal provision of local public goods and (ii) the impacts of computerization on the spatial distribution of economic activity and welfare. I am also interested in Macroeconomics and International Trade Theory.

Masanobu Nakamura’s main research interest is in management control system for project management. Management control system is the central concept of management accounting.
Project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. A project is temporary in that it has a defined beginning and end in time, and therefore defined scope and resources, and a project is unique in that it is not a routine operation, but a specific set of operations designed to accomplish a singular goal (PMBOK® guide).
Dr. Nakamura has about 20years experience as management consultant, and is, now, interested in project management for new product development by Japanese manufacturers and is trying to utilize management control system for new product development by project. In the 21st century, a lot of Japanese manufacturers have to try to launch attractive products, efficiently, by using project management, in accordance with the change speed of market. He is leading the co-research with Asian researchers for Japanese manufacturers.
Dr. Nakamura gives advanced lectures on ‘accounting’ and ‘management accounting’ using concrete cases built upon the experiences as management consultant and the advanced lecture in Meiji University and . He intends to show the essence of management accounting and to support motivation for creativity and inquisitive mind in a learning atmosphere.

Yusuke Miyoshi' current research interest lies in the integration of legal and economic analysis, with particular emphasis on the impact on the real economy of changes in the law governing company law, corporate law, consumer protection, and financial regulation. He has published widely in the fields of corporate governance. For example, “Empirical Analysis of Attorney-Induced Demand Hypothesis under Justice System Reform in Japan”, “Empirical Study on Subsidiary Reacquisition among Japanese Companies”, “Impact of Lower Interest Rate Ceilings on the Lending Market”, and “Effect of Executives’ Shareholding Ratio on Corporate Scandal Prevention”.
